Kia Ora, my name is Liam Mcleavey and I am 14 years old. I am the Deputy Chairperson of Youth Voice Horowhenua and the Founder of Youth Jobs Horowhenua. So a bit about me, I am from a small town in New Zealand called Levin. Levin is a beautiful slice of land located just north of Otaki and just past the Himatangi Straights.
How Youth Jobs Horowhenua came to be
So I like to talk to as many youth as possible to find things that Youth Voice can work on in the community. When I was talking to people, some people said jobs were hard to find. We’ve always known this, but no one has actually done something about it. So at the start of August I launched a social initiative called Youth Jobs Horowhenua.
What is Youth Jobs Horowhenua?
Youth Jobs Horowhenua is a social initiative designed to help youth aged 13-24 find a job, as well as to promote youth working in New Zealand. This is also designed to promote youth as good people. Some people think we are rude teenagers but we are not we, are decent people. But how do we find the jobs?
We are constantly engaging and communicating with our community. Communication and engagement is the key in our opinion.
We launched in the Horowhenua in August and in 20 days 6 people have found full time jobs around the region. You might not think that is a big number, but to the people we have helped it is.
Using social media
We’ve used Facebook as our tool, because we realised basically everyone ison Facebook, so we used this to an advantage. As of writing this at the end of August we have just passed 300 likes which is amazing. My amazing team iscurrently in the process of taking this initiative nationwide.
