UNCROC in New Zealand
New Zealand ratified UNCROC in 1993. Since then Government has submitted three periodic reports to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child: in 1995, 2000 and most recently in November 2008.
In 2003 the Committee issued its most recent concluding observations on New Zealand’s implementation of the rights set out in UNCROC.
In 2004, the Government responded to the Committee’s recommendations by approving an UNCROC Five Year work programme 2004-2008
to assist with the preparation of New Zealand’s third and fourth
consolidated periodic report to the UN Committee
The third and fourth consolidated periodic report was sent to the
United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in November
2008. The report provides comprehensive information on relevant
activity undertaken by the Government that directly responds to the UN
Committee’s recommendations.
It also provides updated information on legislation, policy and
practice that furthers compliance with the Convention’s
obligations. In addition, the Ministry of Social Development’s
2008 report Children and Young People: Indicators of Wellbeing in New Zealand sets out the status of children and young people across a range of indicators.
