UNCROC: Additional monitoring and reporting
As well as receiving five-yearly Government reports on UNCROC, the Committee on the Rights of the Child considers reports from the non-government sector and independent human rights bodies.
New Zealand’s Office of the Children’s Commissioner trains and informs community and government agencies about rights and responds to individual or systemic violations of children's rights.
One of the Commissioner’s statutory roles is to monitor New Zealand’s compliance with UNCROC.
The non-government sector also has the opportunity to report to the UN committee on a five-yearly basis.
In 2001, Action for Children and Youth Action Aotearoa Inc (ACYA), a coalition of non-government advocates for children and young people, coordinated New Zealand’s non-government report. ACYA is currently preparing an updated report to the UN Committee on the implementation of UNCROC in New Zealand, in consultation with other interested non-government organisations. ACYA intend to submit their report in 2010, when it will be considered by the UN Committee alongside the State party report that was submitted in November 2008.
Non-government organisations and Crown Entities that take an active interest in New Zealand's UNCROC compliance include:
- The Human Rights Commission
- The Office of the Children's Commissioner
- Action for Children and Youth Aotearoa Inc (ACYA)
- UNICEF (New Zealand)
- Save the Children (New Zealand)
- YouthLaw Tino Rangatiratanga Taitamariki.
